Introduction to the Dictionary

The book is designed to call to memory the right word (substantive, adjective, verb) using the word that first came to mind and which in the context of our work we regarded it to be not entirely satisfactory. Priority has then been given to the functionality of the book whose size was purposely reduced (14 x 22 centimetres) seeing that it is a book of reference and it must occupy a spot on the work bench of him/her who uses it. The plan of the pages consists in: (a) the main text characterized by key-words, and (b) the analytical index. I preferred to set it out this way since the laying of the terms in alphabetical order would have caused two problems: (1) repetition hence undesired monotony of the same word with different meanings, for example, breast, broom, carriage, court, march, note, thread etc., and (2) thickness, almost double the actual 706 pages. In point of fact, to further reduce the thickness of the present edition I used 70g/m2 paper. The flexible cover, together with width and thickness as specified above, allows the user to hold the book with a single hand and turn the pages with the thumb. The dictionary is linguistically complete save of course those highly technical words which are outside the written and/or spoken language. The literary work abounds in composite-words with their single meaning which the user will never find in an ordinary dictionary, for example: hand-shake, mother tongue, corner-stone, corner-kick, love-partner, sleeping partner etc., or sayings such as: to send from pillar to post, to refer to page so and so, to walk the boards, to overdo a thing, to smell a rat, to talk nonsense, to hold one’s tongue, to master a language, slip of the tongue, slip of the pen etc., which are recalled to mind, and this is the beauty of the present work, at the right moment in the right place. Other examples are: God has been named in 62 different ways and some of the names are made of composite-words. The term “swindler” has been defined with 79 substantives ; the term “stupid” with 51 substantives; and the term “servant”with 46 substantives in the masculine and 12 in the feminine. Further, and to cite only a few examples, there are 82 ways to describe “guards and vigilantes”, and the verb “to shake” was enriched with 65 other verbs with the appropriate meaning required by the physical action. I have made large use of idiomatic phrases and ways of thinking in some foreign languages, in particular in English and in Latin. This very assistant of yours will help you to write phrases such as: to draw water from a well, to attain the goal, to arrive at a decision, to develop a subject, to issue a certificate, to deliver a deed. In closing I recall to the reader’s mind that in order to use the dictionary quickly and correctly, he/she must read the preface carefully. It is here, in fact, that the functionality and the various ways of using the book are clearly explained. Finally, the reference numbers listed in the analytical index are those of the key-words and not of the pages. As an accessory, I would like to mention, that the dictionary will eventually be available in a CD-rom format. Meanwhile my readers may wander freely throughout the contents of the book to appreciate its literary goodness.

Il libro ha la funzione di richiamare alla mente la parola giusta (sostantivo, aggettivo, verbo) usando quella che è venuta subito in mente e della quale non si è soddisfatti. La priorità è stata quindi data alla funzionalità del volume il quale è stato volutamente ridotto (14cm x 22cm), poiché è un libro di riferimento e dovrà occupare un posto sul tavolo di lavoro di colui/colei che lo usa. La struttura delle pagine consiste in: (a) il testo principale caratterizzato da parole chiave, e (b) l’indice analitico. Ho preferito disporlo in questo modo poiché l’ordine alfabetico dei termini avrebbe causato due problemi: (1) ripetizione e quindi indesiderata monotonia di una stessa parola con accezioni diversi, esempio, scopa, corte, filo, marcia, nota, coppa ecc., e (2) spessore, quasi il doppio delle attuali 706 pagine. In verità, per ridurre ancora di più lo spessore di questo volume ho usato carta di 70g/m2. La copertina flessibile assieme alla larghezza e allo spessore di cui ai paragrafi precedenti permettono all’utente di tenere il libro con una sola mano e sfogliarlo col pollice. Il dizionario è linguisticamente completo fatta eccezione naturalmente di quelle parole tecniche che sono al di fuori della lingua scritta e/o parlata. L’opera è ricca di parole-composte di significato singolo che il lettore non troverà facilmente in un ordinario vocabolario, esempio: pietra a guado, stretta di mano, isola delle anime benedette, scorso di lingua, accordo tra le nazioni, complice in amore ecc.; oppure modi di dire come: avere la testa tra le nuvole, rimandare a domani, buttare in un angolo, calcare la mano, mangiarsi la foglia, fare il baco da seta, parlare a vanvera, tenere la lingua tra i denti eccetera. Questi modi di dire sono richiamati alla mente, e questa è la bontà del presente lavoro, al momento giusto e nel posto giusto. Altri esempi sono: Dio è stato nominato in 62 modi differenti e alcuni di essi sono composti di più parole. E ancora, il termine “truffatore” è stato definito con 79 sostantivi; il termine “stupido” con 51 sostantivi; e il termine “servo” con 46 sostantivi al maschile e 12 al femminile. Inoltre, e per citare solo pochi esempi, ci sono 82 modi per descrivere “guardie e vigilanti”, e il verbo “agitare” è stato arricchito da altri 65 verbi con significato richiesto dall’azione fisica. Ho fatto largo uso di frasi idiomatiche e modi di dire in alcune lingue straniere, in particolare, in inglese e in latino. Questo vostro assistente vi aiuterà a scrivere frasi come: attingere l’acqua da un pozzo, pervenire a una decisione, svolgere la propria attività; chiese il rilascio della tessera, la porticina dà accesso in cantina; e saprete anche che una persona singola si accoppia e che un indovino divina non indovina. A chiusura, richiamo alla mente del lettore, che per usare il libro in modo corretto e spedito, deve leggersi attentamente la prefazione. È qui, infatti, che vengono spiegate la funzionalità e l’impostazione dei vari aspetti dell’opera. Infine, i numeri di riferimento dell’indice analitico sono quelli delle parole chiavi e non delle pagine. Come accessorio, vorrei menzionare, che il dizionario sarà eventualmente disponibile in formato CD-rom. Nel frattempo i miei lettori possono brucare liberamente attraverso il contenuto del libro per apprezzarne la bontà letteraria.
